VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

now only Antivir will appear
[News]
By request of the company, we stop using the Avira Desktop engine, and now only Antivir will appear in the scanning results. After the 'union' of Avira and H+BEDV, this is something that had to happen.

Re: VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

A little hint to all the people who are constantly complaining about engine updates (or maybe there are very few people but they complain so much that it seems to be many :D): engine updates don't count as much as signature updates. The scanning engine usually is very small and it gets update in every version of the product. For example if I have v1.0 of product Z and the current version is v2.0 I most probably still have the same engine as v2.0, all I'm missing is some added feature in the firewall or something. If you think about it this makes sense, because you want to support all your users without forcing down their throat updates they don't want. So trust me, it's not about the "program version", it's about the engine version (which isn't usually available) and as long as the program can happily update from the net, it should have the same detection capabilities as the latest version with all the bells and whistles.

To the virustotal guys: keep up the good work, and I wouldn't mind if you would get technical on the blog (like how this service is implemented, etc)

Re: VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

2cd0MaN i already explained that before but i repeat that. please READ what changes happened within Avast! engine due updates (new executable packers support was added for example). It just show You got no idea how engine updates affect products like Avast!. And be sure that difference between DETECT and NOT DETECT is major.
FYI were 6 major program revisions and passed 10 months since that version visible on VirusTotal page. So my hope is that just someone forgot to change that number and NOT update the program.

Re: VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

The avast! engine we're using is the one the company provide us. Keep in mind that we're using command line versions, not the windows oriented one.

Re: Avast!

I assume You using ashCmd.exe (commandline text based scanner from Avast!Pro version, last build 4.7.800) right ? or some special build ?

Re: VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

Yes, we're using ashCmd.exe. The one we've available for using is version 4.6.695.0.

Re: VirusTotal -= Avira Desktop

Thanks jcanto for telling me
now i assume You have been provided also with "ashUpd.exe" version 4.6.x to update VPS (virus database sets).

To update program itself use cmdline parameter "program" instead "vps" ("ashUpd.exe program")
plus You can also use "/silent" switch ("ashUpd.exe program /silent") to not display gui and summary.

This should lead into update of Your commandline text based scanner and rest components to latest version ...
